This is a working design for a ceiling compartment, drawn by Jean Le Pautre (1618-1682) for the plasterers, gilders and painters who built the Louis XIV interior. Sheets like this were the pattern book the trade worked from, and Le Pautre's designs are held today by the Metropolitan Museum and the Getty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"auto\"\u003eSigned in the plate \"le Pautre fecit,\" with \"auec priuil\" for the royal privilege and the address of the Paris publisher P. Mariette, and numbered N.3 in the lower margin. Mariette issued Le Pautre's ceiling suites in the 1650s and 1660s, which places this well before the Jombert collected edition of 1751 that accounts for most surviving impressions.
