James Cantwell American Tonalist Landscape Oil Painting, Signed, c.1900
An American Tonalist landscape in oil on canvas by James Cantwell (American, 1856–1926), signed "Jas. Cantwell" lower right: tall slender trees over a clearing with small figures and grazing animals, a pink-flowering sapling at left, dissolving into a hazy, silvery sky. A Syracuse painter who studied under Thomas Moran and worked alongside Henry Ward Ranger's Tonalist circle, Cantwell painted in exactly this low-keyed, atmospheric idiom — the American answer to the Barbizon school, prizing mood and soft light over detail. A verso label from a Syracuse, New York dealer and framer matches the artist's lifelong home. Oil on canvas in a period giltwood frame; framed about 22.5 in. high × 31 in. wide.
