Aesthetic Movement British Oil, Two Egrets in Lotus Marsh, Rowney Canvas, c.1900
Late Victorian / Edwardian British oil on canvas in the Aesthetic Movement / Japonisme tradition, c.1890–1910 — two white egrets standing among papyrus reeds, pink water lilies, and lotus blossoms in a marsh setting. A quintessential subject of the British Aesthetic period, when Japanese influence transformed decorative painting through Whistler, Tissot, and the Liberty & Co. interior. The narrow vertical format (15 × 36 in.) follows the Japanese kakemono hanging-scroll proportion that European artists adopted from imported woodblock prints; panels of this format were used for narrow architectural walls, overdoors, and decorative-screen elements. Verso bears the canvas stamp of G. Rowney & Co., London W., Quality A — premium prepared linen from the principal British artists' supplier of the period. Signature partially legible at lower edge.
Unframed. Condition: Painted surface stable with colors holding well and subject reading clearly. Some edge wear and old paper backing remnants on verso, consistent with removal from a previous frame or architectural setting. Canvas stamp clearly legible.
Provenance: Not recorded. Signature partially legible at lower edge; artist unconfirmed. Verso bears G. Rowney & Co. canvas stamp, confirming British professional production, c.1890–1910. No ownership history available.
