Antique 19th C. Barbizon Style Oil on Board, River Marsh, Ebonized Frame
A small 19th-century landscape oil on board: a river marsh at overcast midday, green grasses along the bank, still water reflecting a broken sky, and farm buildings set into the middle distance. The handling is loose and assured in the Barbizon tradition, the school of French painters who built the intimate, plein-air landscape that shaped later 19th-century European painting. It is unsigned, so the Barbizon attribution is stylistic rather than documented; read the muted tonal palette and the close-keyed light as the period markers. Oil on board in a worn, period-appropriate ebonized frame with a gilt liner, 7 × 10.25 in. framed, good condition.
Board solid. Some age-appropriate toning and surface dirt. Frame worn consistent with age. Displays well as found.
