Antique 19th Century Portrait of a Young Girl, Oil on Canvas, Gilt Frame, c.1870
A small 19th century oil portrait of a young girl, bust length, carefully finished in the face and left unresolved below. She looks softly down and to her right, dark hair centre parted and drawn back into a low chignon, an off the shoulder white dress dragged in with a loaded brush so the canvas weave reads through it. The face is modelled in soft gradations against a misty grey green ground, the handling of someone trained. The canvas is unlined on its original keyed stretcher and carries a circular colourman's stamp on the verso, partly legible but not yet read; no signature has been found. Sold as found, with a small slit in the canvas, scattered losses to the priming and rubbing along one edge. Period gilt composition frame.
Small slit in the canvas on the left with a cluster of paint losses exposing the orange ground nearby, abrasion and loss along one tacking edge, surface grime and discolored varnish; the canvas is unlined on its original keyed stretcher, and the frame has chips to the gesso.
