Antique American Watercolor, Allegorical Figure with Wreath, Gilt Frame, c.1820

An early American watercolor on paper depicting an allegorical female figure in classical dress, holding a laurel wreath and an olive branch, standing before a landscape of cypress trees and rolling hills. Painted before 1830 by Louisa Welch Pettibone, per family tradition recorded on the mat backing. Descended in the family of Drew Bronson (Brimfield, MA), later in the collection of John O. Curtis (1936–2024), former Curator of Architecture at Old Sturbridge Village. Watercolor on paper, in a period gilt frame with early glass. Frame 18¾ × 15¾ in.; sight 15½ × 12½ in.

Minor tear, light spotting, and toning to the paper, consistent with age.
