Antique Continental Floral Still Life in Urn, Oil on Canvas, 19th C., Gilt Frame

A Continental floral still life in oil on canvas: a full pyramidal cascade of roses, peonies, tulips, hollyhocks and mixed blooms rising from a yellow-ochre footed urn against a near-black ground, with a secondary fall of flowers below. The composition works in the Dutch and Flemish Old Master tradition of Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch, carried into the 19th century by Continental followers. Unsigned, so the attribution rests on style rather than documentation. A verso inscription reads "Fairy Glen, Bettws-y-Coed, North Wales"; as that names a Welsh landscape unrelated to this floral subject, it most likely reflects earlier reuse of the canvas or stretcher. Oil on canvas in an ornate period gilt frame, 29.5 x 25 in. framed.

Good. Canvas unrelined on original stretcher; no major restoration visible. Heavy aged varnish has darkened the composition significantly — conservation cleaning would lift the palette dramatically. Minor surface losses and abrasions at corners and edges of canvas. Period gilt frame in good condition with light losses to gesso ornament along edges, typical of age.
