Antique English Berlin Plush Work Floral Panel, Roses and Bird, Black Ground

Sale price$495.00

A large mid-Victorian Berlin plush-work floral panel, roses and a long-tailed bird worked in deep carved relief on a black wool ground, in a later silver-gilt frame. Berlin work was the dominant domestic needlework of the mid-1800s; in its plush form, loops of dyed wool were packed dense across the canvas and then sheared and carved like topiary into flowers in real relief, seen here in the petal-by-petal carving of the central red rose. The high relief, the scale, and the perched bird place it in the upper tier of the category, above common flat tent-stitch pictures. The needlework is period; the silver-gilt frame is a later replacement, circa 1920s to 40s. Unsigned, so the English origin and mid-century date rest on technique, not a mark.

Plush stitch and tent-stitch work in excellent condition for the age. Carved relief on the major roses, the bird, and the hydrangea-form blossoms intact and dimensional, with no significant wear to the high points and rich original color throughout — the difficult full reds, pale creams, and deep greens all sound. Black wool ground sound, not faded. Faint moth tracking in upper-left ground area on close inspection (disclosable, stable, not visible at viewing distance). Frame is later, a c. 1920s–40s silver-gilt finish with significant honest gilt-loss to the moldings, decoratively complementary, structurally sound. Verso shows period black cotton dust cover, work mounted on its original wood strainer, brass D-ring hangers in place
