Antique French Beaded Glass Flower Composition, Bisque Blooms, Giltwood Frame
An antique French beaded-glass flower composition, fleurs en perles de verre, with a central bouquet of bisque porcelain blooms on caramel velvet in a carved giltwood oval frame, circa 1900. Perles de verre was a French parlor and convent craft from the mid-19th century into the early 20th: white glass seed beads worked over copper wire, made as memorial pieces, votive offerings, or sentimental gifts; here the technique reads in the wired seed-bead leaves and the beaded oval border. The hand-formed unglazed bisque flowers are a refinement that places the piece above plain all-bead examples. Unsigned and undocumented, so the French origin and the date rest on materials and technique, not a mark.
Gilt is worn through to the red bole at the carved high points and the caramel velvet ground shows light toning, consistent with age. A vertical split runs through the wood frame at the base — visible on both the face and the verso — while the beaded sprays and bisque blooms appear intact.
