Antique French Oil on Board, River Landscape with Castle Ruins, Signed, c.1920
A French plein-air river landscape in oil on board: castle ruins on a rocky promontory above a calm reflecting river, a small classical pavilion at the water's edge, trees framing the view, the sky worked in loose, impressionistic strokes. The board carries a Unis France maker's mark (format 6F, 41 × 33 cm), a French collective trademark registered in 1916, which dates the support to the early 20th century rather than the 19th. It is signed lower right but the signature is illegible, so the artist is unidentified; the French origin is documented by the board's mark. Oil on a Unis France board, unframed, 13 × 16 in., good condition with a small area of damage at upper left.
Board sound and stable. Surface with age-appropriate patina. Unframed. Small defect on upper left side.
