Antique Oil Painting, Sunset River Landscape, Academy Board, Gilt Frame, c.1890
A quiet 19th-century river landscape at sunset, painted with an unfussy, hand-done charm typical of the era's parlor pictures — a calm river winds past rocky outcroppings and green trees toward distant blue mountains, two small sailing figures adrift on the water under a soft pink-and-mauve sky. The composition follows the romantic parlor-landscape formula common in amateur and modest professional painting of the period, roughly 1880–1910. Indistinctly signed in red lower right; the signature could not be read, so the artist remains unidentified. Oil on academy board, set in its original narrow gilt cove-and-bead frame, 15.75 × 9.5 in. overall. The original brown kraft paper backing is intact but torn at upper center, exposing the reverse of the board; twisted wire hanger present.
Fair. The painting shows substantial vertical paint loss across the upper third of the composition, with long streaks of cracked and lifted paint exposing the ground beneath, additional smaller losses along the left edge and lower-left corner, and overall surface darkening from age and varnish. The gilt cove frame is heavily worn with composition losses at the corners and rubbed gilt throughout, the kraft paper backing is torn at the upper edge but the board, hanging hardware, and frame remain structurally sound.
