Antique Victorian Pressed Fern Composition, Faux Grained Wood Frame, Round
An antique Victorian pressed-fern composition under glass, a spray of natural ferns and small flowers on a stamped cream ground in a round turned wood frame, faux-grained to imitate figured rosewood, with a turned finial hanger. These framed pressed botanicals belong to the late-Victorian fern craze, pteridomania, when collectors went on fern forays to gather and press native specimens, then mounted them as parlor decorations and souvenirs of country walks. The ferns here are real pressed specimens, not a printed fern lithograph, set against a printed decorative border. The piece carries no mark; the fern craze was strongest in Britain but the work was made across Europe and America, so a firm country of origin is not established.
Good for age. Pressed ferns and flowers stable and intact; subtle natural fading to a soft tea-stain palette of ochre, sepia, and dusty rose. Glass clear and sound. Frame retains its original faux-grain painted finish — honest age-toning, no losses; turned hanger-finial original to the piece. Verso shows period construction with nail-tacked back panel, untouched.
