Antique Victorian Shellwork Picture Frame, Two-Band Conch and Periwinkle, Round
An antique Victorian shellwork picture frame, a round two-band design with an outer wreath of gilt-painted conch and spindle shells and an inner ring of periwinkles and topshells around a red silk velvet matt and a glazed center. Shellwork was a parlor and seaside-souvenir craft of the late 19th century, worked from packets of sorted shells and printed patterns; small frames, boxes, and roundels were the common forms, made for sweethearts and as holiday mementoes. The shells are real, set in two graded bands, the verso retaining a faux-bois paper backing and original cord lacing. The craft was produced in port towns on both sides of the Atlantic, and this example carries no mark, so a specific country of origin is not established.
Excellent for age. No shell losses to either the outer conch band or the inner periwinkle band; both bands tightly intact and in original arrangement. Velvet matt retains rich original red colour with no fading or wear. Gilt finish on the shells has softened to a pale tarnished tone — honest period patina. Original glass clear and sound. Verso construction untouched, with original jute-cord stability bracing and original brass hardware.
