Attrib. J. Meadows, British, Pair Portrait Miniatures, Mr. and Mrs. Scavaffee, 1836

Sale price$850.00

Pair of British portrait miniatures of Mr. and Mrs. Scavaffee, dated June 27, 1836, attributed to James Meadows Sr. (British, 1798–1864). The gentleman is shown seated in a paneled interior beside a classical bust and a Rococo Revival gilt console; the lady is seated against draped blue and gold curtains opening to a landscape with figures on a balustraded terrace. Watercolor and bodycolor on paper, in original rosewood or mahogany frames behind glass with deep velvet-lined fillets. Meadows is recorded principally as a marine painter active in London; portrait miniatures by him are documented but uncommon in the auction record. 9.75 × 8.5 in framed.  Condition: Both miniatures present brightly with strong color saturation and no visible losses to the painted surfaces. Matched box-form frames and original glass structurally sound with intact hanging hardware. Light surface dust and possible spotting at upper edge of the lady's miniature warrant in-hand inspection. Lady's verso retains original velvet backing; inscribed paper label torn at one corner but fully legible.  Provenance: Inscribed paper label on verso of the lady's miniature reads "Mrs. Scavaffee / June 27th 1836 / painted by J. Meadows." Previously sold at Freeman's Auction, Philadelphia, April 28, 2025, lot 122.
