Early 19th C. English Folk Watercolor, Ulswater Cumberland, Period Frame
An early 19th-century English amateur watercolor of Ullswater, the Lake District lake in historic Cumberland, hand-lettered "ULSWATER CUMBERLAND" across the lower image. The view follows the Picturesque convention of the Lake District tourism boom: a sailboat, two small figures in period costume on a foreground promontory, a crag at right, and blue mountains with a small ruin beyond. The handling is amateur, in the schoolgirl watercolor tradition of the period, likely copied from a published topographical print. The period spelling "Ulswater" was current c.1790-1830, consistent with an early-19th-century date. Watercolor in a period black and gilt frame, 10 x 12 in. framed.
Watercolor sound on its paper support. Heavy foxing throughout the sky and lighter passages — age-honest but visible. Paper browned with age toning. Image and composition fully legible; hand-lettered title intact. Period stained wood frame in fair condition with edge wear, finish loss, and old verso paper backing torn at edges.
