End of the Hunt, Color Print After J.F. Herring Sr., NY Graphic Society, Framed
A large framed color reproduction print, "End of the Hunt," after the sporting painting by John Frederick Herring Sr. (1795-1865), the composition engraved by John Harris and here reissued by the New York Graphic Society. The scene shows the close of the chase: scarlet-coated riders converging, hounds milling, horses pressing together under brilliant autumn trees, with a stream and gate at the right. The margins carry "PAINTED BY J.F. HERRING, SENR," "ENGRAVED BY J. HARRIS," and a New York Graphic Society copyright, which identify it as a 20th-century American reproduction of the British sporting original rather than a period engraving. Strong large-format decorative presence, well matted under glass in a wood frame. 22 x 28.5 in. framed.
Good overall. Some toning consistent with age. Colors bright and intact. Frame — dark walnut with gilt inner edge and double mat — presents well.
