Joseph-Marius Avy "Garden Statue in Autumn Woodland," 1906
A 1906 oil on canvas by Joseph-Marius Avy (French, 1871–1939): a classical statue on a stone pedestal in a formal autumn woodland, held in a giltwood frame. Avy was a Belle Époque Salon painter, trained in Paris under Léon Bonnat and a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1900 to 1933; this is a small garden study rather than one of his larger figural compositions. The attribution is documented, not stylistic: the work is signed and dated "Jm. Avy '06." Read the autumnal copper-and-amber palette and the loose, painterly handling as period markers. Oil on canvas in a giltwood frame, 24 × 21 in. framed, good condition.
Canvas sound with age-appropriate craquelure. Some surface dirt and toning. Displays well as found. Period pine stretcher on verso.
