Pair Antique Sterling Silver Overlay Perfume Bottles, Engraved Art Nouveau
Two scent bottles for a dressing table, each wrapped in sterling silver that was grown onto the glass rather than fitted over it. The taller bottle is pear shaped, with one large blossom engraved across its body and a bud stopper whose silver leaves frame clear glass windows. The smaller is squat and round, with engraved flowers and long leaves, and a ball stopper.
Silver overlay was a turn of the century technique: the design was painted on the glass in a conductive paste, the bottle was left in a silver plating bath until a thick layer of metal built up, and the silver was then engraved by hand. The taller bottle is marked sterling. Neither is monogrammed. Taller approx. 5 in.
Condition: Light tarnish to the overlay, darkest at the necks and around the foot of the smaller bottle.
