Pair Blue Opaline Vases, Hand-Painted Birds & Peonies, c.1870
Pair of blue opaline glass vases, hand-blown and hand-painted, in the robin's egg blue most associated with mid-19th century French opaline. Each carries the same composition: a crested bird on a branch, white peonies in bloom, a dragonfly, and scattered red berries against a pale blue ground. The painting is hand-executed rather than transfer-printed, visible in the slight variation between the two and in the brushwork. The form is the classic opaline baluster, in proportions standardized during the Napoleon III period (1852-1870). Several Lorraine glasshouses including Baccarat, Saint-Louis, Portieux, and Vallerysthal produced opaline of this quality. Without a maker's mark a firm attribution is not possible. 14 x 6 x 6 in each.
Both vases intact with no chips, cracks, or hairlines. Hand-painted decoration vivid with no significant paint loss, flaking, or fading.
