The Royal Mail Coach, Hand-Colored Coaching Engraving, Large Format, Gilt Frame
A large coaching print, "The Royal Mail Coach" titled in the lower margin, four horses at full gallop drawing the mail coach with a royal cypher, passengers atop and a red-liveried guard sounding the post horn. The galloping mail coach was a staple subject of the British coaching-print tradition, issued by houses such as Pollard, Fores, and Ackermann and reproduced well into the 20th century. The publication line is hidden under the frame edge, so the engraver, publisher, and printing method are unestablished, and whether this is a period hand-colored aquatint or a later reproduction cannot be determined while framed. 23 × 33 in. framed, distressed silver-gilt frame.
Good overall consistent with age. Some toning to paper. Hand coloring intact and bright. Frame — silver and gilt — shows appropriate wear.
