Antique 1874 Chromolithograph, The Setters, Three English Setters, Walnut Frame
Three English setters work a highland moor, and the third is drawn only in outline, a pale ghost of a dog left uncolored at the edge of the scene. That unfinished touch is the charm of "The Setters," an 1874 Victorian sporting print. The two finished dogs, one crouched low in front and one behind with its tail flagged, are drawn in close, confident line over heather browns and a blue-gray mountain. Setters sat at the heart of Victorian sporting life; Britain's first dog show, at Newcastle in 1859, was for pointers and setters only. Matted under glass in a period walnut frame with a gilt liner, original plank backboard and twisted hanging wire. 13.5 x 16 in. framed.
Condition: Mat and paper evenly toned, with a few small spots in the margins; the colors remain clear. Light wear to the gilt liner and frame edges, and the paper dust seal on the back is mostly torn away.
