Victorian Oil Portrait, Young Woman in Tartan Dress, English School c.1845
A young woman in an off-the-shoulder gown of red and black tartan sits with white gloves in her lap, a brooch at the bodice and flowers in her dark ringleted hair. The dress and the hair place her in the 1840s, the decade Queen Victoria's Highland enthusiasm made tartan fashionable in drawing rooms far from Scotland. Unsigned, as much provincial portraiture of the period was; the hand is trained, with the sitter's hands and the tartan's pattern carried convincingly through the folds. The sitter is not identified. Oil on canvas, relined, in a period carved and gilded frame with acanthus scrolls. 42.5 x 34 inches.
Canvas sound and stable. Relined. Surface varnish darkened with age — the painting would respond well to professional cleaning. Frame with honest age wear and some gilt loss consistent with period.
